About Indian Coast Guard

Established on the 18th of August in accordance with the Coast Guard Act, 1978 the Indian Coast Guard is an independent armed force unit — that operates the Ministry of Defence — tasked with the protection of India’s maritime interests.

The ICG enforces the Maritime Law and has jurisdiction over the Indian territorial waters, including its contiguous and exclusive economic zones. Moreover, they work in tandem with the following departments and forces:

  • Indian Coast Guard Recruitment 2020-21 - Navik - General Duty & Domestic

Candidates inducted as a Navik (sailor) by the ICG can serve in different domestic departments or be on general duty. In general duty, Naviks can also be assigned designations such as weapons systems operators, sailors, divers, and communication specialists.

In domestic duty, Naviks such as job roles such as stewards, cooks and so on.

Eligibility:

For Naviks - General Duty

Age Criteria: 18 - 22 years as on 1st July of recruitment year. 3 years age relaxation for OBC candidates, and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. 

Education Criteria: 12th pass from a recognized board with an aggregate of 50% or higher and at least 50% combined in Maths and Physics.

Physical Criteria: Minimum 157 cm and must be in proportion to weight; Candidates must also complete — 1.6 km run in 7 minutes, 20 squats and 10 pushups. 

For Naviks - Domestic

Age Criteria: 18 - 22 years as on 1st July of recruitment year. 3-year age relaxation for OBC candidates, and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. 

Education Criteria: 12th pass from a recognized board with at least 50% aggregate.

Physical Criteria: Height 157 cms; weight proportionate to height; normal hearing ability; no physical disability; no cardiovascular diseases; 1.6 km run in 7 minutes; 20 squats; 10 pushups. 

  • Indian Coast Guard Recruitment 2020-21 - Yantrik 

ICG Yantrik’s are hired for technical roles. They are responsible for the upkeep and operation of mechanical and electrical systems and equipment. Chosen candidates are trained for the profession and also undergo sea training. 

Eligibility:

Age Criteria: 18 - 22 years. 3-year age relaxation for OBC candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.

Educational Criteria: Candidates must be 10th pass and possess a diploma in electrical, mechanical, or electronics and telecommunication engineering with an aggregate of 60%. A relaxation of 5% is awarded to SC/ ST candidates and national-level sportspersons who have bagged 1st, 2nd or 3rd position in any discipline.

Physical Criteria: A minimum height of height measuring 157 cms; well-proportioned chest with a minimum expansion of 5 cms; weight proportionate to age and height (with a 10% exception); normal hearing; 1.6 km run in 7 minutes; 20 squats; 10 pushups. 

  • Indian Coast Guard Recruitment 2020-21 - Assistant Commandant Jobs

Assistant Commands in the Indian Coast Guard can be recruited for General Duty or as pilots, engineers, and lawyers.

General Duty Officer: The General Duty Officer operates various weapons and equipment and looks after the ship’s security and all the personnel aboard.

Pilot Officer: Also considered as a general duty officer for air service, the pilot officer is based at the air stations. 

Technical Officer: Tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that the sensor systems and equipment operate.

Law Officer: Represents the ICG and its commanders for any legal proceedings against them.

Eligibility:

Citizenship: Candidate must hold Indian citizenship.

Physical/Medical Criteria: The physical/medical examination of the candidates shortlisted by the FSB (Final Selection Board) will be conducted at the closest military hospital. They must fulfil the following criteria:

Indian Coast Guard Recruitment Process

For Navik - General Duty and Domestic

The candidates are selected on the basis of the marks received in the minimum educational qualifying criteria set by the hiring authority. Then comes the written examination which jas questions from subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, general knowledge, english, quantitative aptitude, current affairs, and reasoning.

Those qualifying in the written examination then proceed to the physical/medical evaluation phase where, once again, the criteria must be fulfilled.

ICG Yantrik Job Selection Process

The Yantrik recruitment is done in several stages as listed below:

Stage 1 : A written examination wherein the eligible candidate has to attempt the paper that consists of questions from disciplines he/she belongs to viz. electrical, electronics and telecommunication, and mechanical.

Stages 2 and 3: Qualifying candidates must then undergo a medical/physical evaluation as mentioned in the physical criteria mentioned above.

Stage 4: The last phase is document verification wherein the personal documents of belonging to the candidate will be verified. This phase is common across all selection processes irrespective of the job role. However, keep in mind that the same set of documents might not be required for all job roles for verification purposes. The details for this phase will be provided on the ICG recruitment portal and on Aasaanjobs.

ICG Assistant Commandant Job Selection Process

Just like the previous selection process, the Assistant Commandant sarkari job’s selection process is also conducted in several stages. 

Stage 1: Applications are shortlisted based on the age, educational, physical/medical criteria. Those who make the cut then proceed to stage 2. 

Stage 2: The Preliminary Exam. Also known as prelims, the candidates have to appear from an exam that tests cognitive aptitude, mental ability, picture perception. This phase also consists of a discussion test. 

Stage 3: Then comes the final exam for those who qualify in prelims. It consists of a group task, psychological test, interview/personality test. Verification of documents also applies to this stage.

  • What is the salary of an Assistant Commandant?

As per the 7th CPC, a Level 10 Assistant Commandant draws a basic salary of INR 56,100. Apart from the salary benefits, the recruits are given certain allowances (as discussed above).
