The  State Bank of India (SBI) is a multinational public sector banking and financial services government corporation statutory body of India. SBI is the most popular and trusted bank in India and was ranked as the 236th company in the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest corporations of 2019. They have a 23% market share in assets and a share of 1/4th of the entire loans and deposits market. The Reserve Bank of India owns the 60% stake in SBI making it a government-controlled organization with higher authority. With around 24,0000 branches, SBI is the largest bank in India. It also has 16 regional hubs and 57 zonal offices that are stationed at major cities throughout India.

Subsidiaries of SBI

SBI procured the control of 7 regional banks of former Indian princely states in 1960.  These seven banks were:

  •  State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ)
  •  State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH)
  •  State Bank of Indore (SBN)
  •  State Bank of Mysore (SBM)
  • State Bank of Patiala (SBP)

Later in 2008, SBI started efforts to make it a bigger bank by merging the subsidiaries. As a result, in the following September, all the associates except  State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, and State Bank of Travancore merged with SBI making them the last standing associate banks with SBI.

In 2017, the Union Cabinet established the merger of the remaining five associate banks with SBI, making it the largest banking organization in India. The merger came to effect on 1st April 2017.

The non-banking subsidiaries of SBI are:

  • SBI Capital Markets Ltd
  • SBI Cards & Payments Services Pvt. Ltd. (SBICPSL)
  • SBI Life Insurance Company Limited

The other SBI service points include, approximately 59,291 ATMs and a digital banking platform -- 'YONO'.
